Welcome to this episode of the American Cattlemen Podcast.  Our series from Gale's recent trip to the NCBA CattleCon show in San Antonio, TX led to a sit down with longtime customers Cassy Wilson and Heather Dallas. The sisters discussed their family business, which was started by their father, inspired by his rodeo experiences and a need for better cattle handling equipment. Rawhide Portable Corrals has evolved over 23 years, expanding from a single corral model to three different models and introducing innovative products. A key innovation is their torsion suspension system, which addresses previous customer complaints about bouncy trailers and truck strain. The system was personally designed by their father and has been well-received in the industry. The company recently launched a new windbreak product with optional features like a calving pen and calf bars. This portable system provides additional protection for cattle and can be easily transported and set up. Cassie and Heather emphasized their commitment to continuous improvement, customer service, and meeting producers' needs. They offer various corral sizes, including the Rancho Deluxe, the largest portable corral in the market. The podcast highlighted Rawhide's family-driven approach to innovation in cattle handling equipment, showcasing their dedication to solving practical challenges for cattle producers. It is always a great conversation when we get to chat with these two.

Moly Manufacturing

Thursday Mar 06, 2025

Thursday Mar 06, 2025

The American Cattlemen Podcast features Gail McKinney interviewing John Mollhagen and Gene Dubas from Molly Manufacturing at Cattle Con 2025. The discussion centers on the company's innovative cattle handling equipment and safety solutions. John Mollhagen explained the company's origins, which began with developing Trans Corral due to challenges with existing pasture equipment. They focused on creating hydraulic chutes with reduced noise and improved safety features. Their Silencer chute was designed to address problems with traditional "nutcracker" style gates, such as animal choking and potential injury. Gene Dubas highlighted the Turret Gate system as a significant safety innovation. The hydraulic swing gate allows remote operation, eliminating the need for workers to be in close proximity to cattle. He emphasized the critical safety benefits, noting recent local fatalities from cattle-related accidents. The podcast also discussed the Hydro Dragon, a firefighting tool developed to quickly control pasture fires. Additionally, they touched on current cattle industry challenges, including declining cattle numbers and an aging rancher population. The interview concluded by encouraging listeners to visit Molly Manufacturing's website for more information about their products, which aim to improve safety and efficiency in cattle handling.

Thursday Mar 06, 2025

Western Cattle Source, owned by Jock and Brenda Beeson, is a ranching operation located in western Nebraska that specializes in producing high-quality Semenal and Angus cattle. With 28 years of experience, the Beesons have built a reputation for raising robust, performance-driven cattle that excel in commercial and registered settings. Their upcoming annual production sale on March 20, 2025, will feature 79 bulls and several female offerings. The bull selection includes age advantage and yearling bulls from multiple sires, emphasizing structural soundness, growth potential, and balanced genetics. Key bull bloodlines include Trifecta, Journeyman, and Ransom, with a focus on cattle that can cover large pastures and perform under challenging conditions. The female offerings include bred heifers and pairs, highlighted by a set of reserve champion females from the National Western Stock Show. These females come from proven donor cows and are expected to calve around the sale date, providing immediate value to potential buyers. Jock Beeson emphasizes their breeding philosophy of creating balanced, structurally correct cattle that perform across different environments. Their approach prioritizes maintaining good structure and mobility, preserving eye appeal, keeping consistent marbling and rib eye sizes, ensuring low birth weights and good calving ease, and producing bulls that are muscular but not overly fat. The sale will be conducted through DVAuction with Chisholm Peterson as the auctioneer. Buyers can receive discounts for purchasing multiple bulls, with rates ranging from 3% to 10%. Bulls will be held until April 15th free of charge, and the entire sale will take place in their indoor arena to ensure comfort regardless of weather conditions. As an added bonus, the Beesons will also offer quarter horses from their breeding program, adding diversity to their sale offerings.

Chad Murnin of Bar Star Cattle in Musselshell, Montana, have built a successful purebred Hereford and commercial cattle operation from scratch over the past 20 years. Located in the Bull Mountains, their ranch spans over 23,000 acres and represents a testament to young agricultural entrepreneurs who have overcome significant challenges in land acquisition and ranch establishment. The upcoming annual bull and female sale, scheduled for March 20, 2025, will feature 41 age-advantage and yearling bulls, along with 30 black baldy replacement heifers. Chad highlighted their unique approach to cattle breeding, focusing on breaking traditional Hereford stereotypes by emphasizing feet and udder quality, pigmentation, and muscling. Their fall calving program provides advantages in cattle management, allowing cows to winter more efficiently and bulls to develop robustly on grasslands. The Murnin pride themselves on breeding functional, practical cattle that perform in real-world conditions. They don't breed specifically for show rings but instead showcase cattle bred for commercial productivity. Their genetic program centers around two primary sire groups - Bar Star Nemesis and Bar Star Rebellion - with most bulls being bred and raised on their own ranch. Their replacement heifer offering includes purebred and baldy cattle, with 10 elite heifers from their own herd and 20 from long-time customer the Scoyne family. The sale will be conducted virtually through live screens and online platforms, reflecting modern agricultural marketing techniques. Chad and Stephanie are committed to transparency, inviting potential buyers to visit their ranch, view their cattle, and understand their breeding philosophy. Their operation represents a modern approach to cattle breeding: practical, performance-driven, and focused on providing high-quality genetics to commercial producers. The podcast interview showcases their passion for agriculture, commitment to genetic improvement, and the challenges of building a successful ranch in today's competitive agricultural landscape.

Welcome back to the American Cattlemen Podcast. We have an exciting series from Gale's recent trip to San Antonio, Texas, for CattleCon. Our next guest is Dr. Sam Ingram from Corteva who will lead the discussion focusing on pasture management and a new herbicide called Nova Graz. Dr. Sam Ingram, a field scientist at Corteva, shares insights into agricultural practices and weed control strategies for cattle producers. Dr. Ingram, who grew up on a beef cattle operation in Georgia and has a PhD from NC State, discusses the importance of white clover in pasture management. White clover is valuable because it produces its own nitrogen, reducing fertilizer costs, and provides high-quality nutrition with increased crude protein and total digestible nutrients. The highlight of the episode is Nova Graz, a new herbicide designed to control broadleaf weeds while preserving white clover and annual lespedeza. The product contains 2,4-D and Rinscore, making it effective against various weeds like buttercup, ironweed, thistles, and plantain. It offers producers a solution to manage weeds without destroying beneficial legumes. A significant portion of the discussion centers on managing pastures during dry weather. Dr. Ingram advises producers to be cautious about early grazing, emphasizing the importance of protecting root systems and allowing pastures to recover. He recommends using hay reserves and waiting for adequate moisture before intensive grazing. Rotational grazing emerges as another key topic, with Dr. Ingram stressing the importance of allowing pastures to rest and recover. He suggests that even smaller operations can benefit from strategic grazing practices that protect plant health and maximize forage production.  The podcast underscores Corteva's commitment to providing innovative solutions for agricultural challenges, with a focus on helping producers maximize productivity, profitability, and sustainability.

Halter

Thursday Feb 27, 2025

Thursday Feb 27, 2025

Welcome back to the American Cattlemen Podcast. We have an exciting series from Gale's recent trip to San Antonio, Texas, for CattleCon. The American Cattlemen podcast featured an insightful conversation with Justin Wells, US Country Manager for Halter, a innovative virtual fencing technology company originating in New Zealand.
Wells shared his unique background, transitioning from a Marine Corps career to technology, driven by a passion for ranching and wildlife conservation. Halter and their virtual fencing system represents a technological breakthrough in cattle management. The company's founder, Craig, developed the solution after recognizing the inefficiencies of traditional cattle movement on dairy farms. The system utilizes a specialized collar that uses solar and lithium-ion battery technology to guide cattle through auditory and gentle tactile cues. The collar's most innovative feature is its personalized approach, with each cow receiving a unique "cow rhythm" algorithm that adapts to its individual behavior. This means more docile cattle receive different guidance compared to more boundary-pushing animals, ensuring a low-stress experience for the herd. Economically, Halter and their system offers significant advantages over traditional fencing. The technology reduces labor costs, improves pasture utilization, and can potentially increase weaning weights. Ranchers can manage their herds remotely through a mobile app, plotting virtual fence boundaries with unprecedented flexibility. Halter's mission extends beyond product development, aiming to enable 50% of land mass to become more productive and sustainable. The company is strategically entering the US market, focusing on regions from Montana to Texas, and working closely with ranchers to refine their technology. The virtual fencing solution not only benefits ranchers by saving time and improving operational efficiency but also provides a compelling narrative for consumers about responsible and innovative agricultural practices. Justin Wells emphasized that their ultimate goal is to give ranchers more freedom – allowing them to attend football games, take vacations, and manage their herds with unprecedented ease and confidence.

Just ahead, we have Gale McKinney, the Publisher of American Cattlemen, and Jeremy Leister, the Ranch Manager for Pollard Farms. The American Cattlemen Podcast featured an in-depth interview with Jeremy Lessinger, ranch manager of Pollard Farms, discussing the upcoming 26th annual spring bull and female sale scheduled for March 19, 2025. Pollard Farms, owned by Dr. Barry and Roxanne Pollard, has grown into a substantial Angus cattle operation since Dr. Pollard started his herd in 1992. Today, the ranch manages nearly 1,000 head of cattle spread across Kingfisher and Garfield Counties in Oklahoma, with a focus on high-quality Angus genetics. The upcoming sale will feature a diverse offering of cattle, including 75 fall bulls aged 18 to 22 months, 35 yearling Angus bulls, and 40 registered Angus females. Jeremy emphasized the ranch's commitment to producing bulls with exceptional characteristics, including strong carcass values, good feet, maternal instincts, and athletic capabilities. The bulls are carefully developed, initially grazing on rye and sand, and then slowly conditioned to ensure they are range-ready and prepared to service commercial herds. The ranch takes pride in selecting genetics that will help commercial producers increase their herd's genetic potential and create profitable daughter lines. Jeremy, who previously managed the purebred beef cattle center at Oklahoma State University, highlighted Pollard Farms' dedication to finding innovative genetics and maintaining a reputation for quality. The sale offers opportunities for both established commercial producers and newcomers to the cattle business, with options ranging from bred cows and heifers to spring pairs.  Pollard Farms continues to demonstrate its commitment to the beef industry by providing high-quality Angus genetics and supporting commercial cattle producers through their comprehensive breeding program.
