Welcome back to the American Cattlemen Podcast. Just ahead, we have Dustin Hector, He's the director of Business Development for the American Cattlemen Podcast, and he sits down with Garrett Dwyer with Open Range Windbreaks.
Garrett, a United States Marine Corps veteran and graduate of the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture, operates a successful Angus and Hereford cow-calf operation in Wheeler County.
The inspiration for Garrett's portable windbreaks came during a brutally cold winter in 2022 when he was managing cattle in an open landscape with minimal natural shelter. Recognizing the need for a versatile, mobile solution, he designed two distinct windbreak models that address the challenges of protecting livestock during harsh weather conditions.
The first model, which sits on a 24-foot gooseneck trailer, includes a feeder and space for three large round bales. When deployed, it provides 70 feet of wind protection with hinged wings that can be easily opened or closed. This design allows ranchers to transport feed and shelter simultaneously, offering flexibility during severe weather events.
The second model, called the "Defender," is a more expansive windbreak spanning 120 feet with five interconnected panels that can be positioned in various configurations. Both models emphasize efficiency, durability, and ease of use, addressing the practical needs of modern cattle producers.
The Open Range Windbreaks are manufactured locally in Nebraska by a fellow cattleman who understands the rigorous demands of agricultural equipment. To demonstrate his confidence in the product, Garrett offers a one-year manufacturer's warranty, highlighting the windbreaks' quality and reliability.
The Open Range Windbreaks represent a significant advancement in livestock management, providing ranchers with a versatile tool to protect their cattle during challenging weather conditions.

The Illini Top Cut Annual Fall Production Sale held Sunday October 12 at 1 PM at the Farm in Macomb, Illinois. What a great conversation with Monte Lowderman with Lowderman Cattle Company! The Lowderman’s have put together an excellent line up for this Fall 2025 sale and you won’t be disappointed. Monte was a great interview and you can tell his auctioneer background makes him an excellent story teller. This is a really great story by a great midwest family!Welcome to this year’s Illini Top Cut sale! What exciting times in the cattle business and the future looks bright. We are proud of this set of cattle and feel, without question it is our deepest and highest quality set of ET calves we have ever offered, complimented by a stellar group of young bred females that are ready to add value and revenue to your bottom line. The Lady 48E cow family has become a staple here at LCC and this is the largest offering we have had that is either direct progeny or second generation offspring of hers. These cattle have high end value and quality bred into them. A highlight is a trio of sisters sired by Red Kingdom and out of 130K who was our lead off cow in last year’s sale that we sold ½ interest in to Grimmel Schaake cattle. Just proof that the 48E cow family is going to thrive aggressively. The bred heifers offered were retained with this sale in mind to offer up. They are all out of power donor cows that have huge breeding value and potential. A headliner in that division is lot 7, a Maverick x 48E daughter that needs to head straight to the donor pen after calving this fall. The young cows selling are exceptional with added udder quality, structure and eye appeal that have all raised big calves, we are excited about what these bred females can do for their new owners. The 2026 Jr. National Junior Hereford Expo is just to the north in Madison, WI next summer and we feel there are several heifers that are high end caliber that will be very competitive and well represented. Show cattle have been near and dear to us, but we believe in cattle that will thrive, be productive, and add value in production and we are confident these heifers will be major contributors after their show careers. We have a deep passion for Hereford cattle, the Hereford breed and most importantly the Hereford people. We are beyond thankful and blessed for our past customers, their success, our current customers and welcome new faces to LCC and Macomb, IL. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or need travel assistance. We look forward to seeing you on October 12.

Chessie Creek Farm of Walterboro, South Carolina Inaugural Female Sale, October 11, 2025, Noon EST, at the Farm & on DVAuction.com
Scott Sell is a seasoned cattleman and agricultural professional with decades of experience in beef cattle management, research, and herd development. He holds a degree a BS Degree from University of Georgia and a MS degree from Clemson University Sell also holds multiple industry certifications some of which include Registered Professional Animal Scientist, nutrient management planner, and certified beef quality assurance.
Today, he serves as General Manager of Chessie Creek Farm in Walterboro, South Carolina, where he oversees a premier registered Angus herd of 400 brood cows across 4000 acres of pasture, forage, and managed pine. Sell’s extensive background in cattle reproduction, nutrition, forage management, herd health, and genetic improvement uniquely positions him to guide the long-term success of Chessie Creek Farm. In addition, Sell successfully organizes annual sales to sell some the farm’s high-quality genetics through registered female and bull sales.
In late 2021 and early 2022, Andrew Agostini came to me with a vision for developing a first class, top of the breed, Angus operation in the low country. Dan Ulmer and I, along with Servando Marin, Farit Guitierrez, and David Castellanos set out to do our best to make that vision come true. We took an unconventional approach. Instead of going out and purchasing 4-5 expensive donors we decided to start picking up some of the best embryos we could find, and transferring to recips Andrew already had on the farm. This was the flame that lit the fire. In the Spring of 2023, Chessie Creek and 44 Farms formed an alliance in the Angus business and to help increase 44’s Prime Pursuits presence in the SE US. Later in May 2023, Chessie purchased 30 bred heifers and 70 pregnant recips from 44. Tracy Woods, Doug Slattery, and Bob McClaren didn’t hold back when opening their herd to us, picking out some of the top matings and heifers in the herd to send to us. Many of those bred heifers are donors with progeny in this Inaugural Chessie Creek sale. In 2023 we also purchased 44 Bright Lights as our first herd sire and brought him on board. His genetics have already made an impact on commercial and Angus cattle in SC and GA, with semen sales to commercial and purebred producers. The partnership with 44 took the next step with Chessie Creek becoming a bull cooperator herd for 44. To date we have sent over 120 bulls at weaning back out to 44 to be developed and sell in their bull sales, many of those being progeny of the very same group of bred heifers we purchased from them. In keeping with our philosophy of we are all better off in life working together, we have formed a strong partnership with Black Creek Angus and Ralph Massenburg and his family. It is a strong partnership that encompasses sharing genetics, labor, and friendship that just makes this business click. The partnerships with Black Creek and 44 Farms will only get stronger in the years to come. Andrew has allowed us to grow and develop this herd to be what it is today. The trust and confidence he puts in this crew here at Chessie Creek is unmatched, and means the world to all of us. So that’s how we got here. Come to see us on October 10-11, 2025, and share in a glimpse of where we are going.

Welcome back to the American Cattlemen Podcast. Just ahead, we have Gale McKinney, he's the owner of the American Cattlemen and he sits down with Doug Peterson, Co-Owner of Peterson Prime Angus.
Doug, alongside his wife Kathy, has transformed their family's agricultural legacy by focusing on high-quality Angus cattle breeding, particularly emphasizing marbling and genetic excellence. With a background in biology and genetics, Doug entered the registered Angus business approximately 15 years ago, driven by a desire to understand the precise genetic backgrounds of his cattle. Influenced by industry experts like Mark Gardner, Peterson developed a strategic approach to cattle breeding that prioritizes traits like marbling, carcass value, and overall genetic merit. The upcoming third annual Peterson Prime Angus online female sale represents the culmination of their breeding efforts. Notably, the sale features some of the top marbling heifers in the Angus breed, with several animals ranking in the top 1% for marbling characteristics. These genetics are so exceptional that some heifers have marbling scores significantly above the breed's top 1% threshold.
Peterson's commitment extends beyond breeding, as he's also involved in a processing plant and retail beef store in Brookfield, Missouri. This hands-on approach allows him to understand the entire beef production chain, from genetics to consumer experience. He emphasizes the importance of producing high-quality meat that provides an exceptional eating experience. For commercial producers, Peterson advises focusing on genetics that will generate premium returns, particularly by retaining ownership of cattle with superior marbling traits. He believes that while current market prices are high, the long-term value of high-quality genetics will remain crucial. The podcast underscores Peterson's passion for continuous improvement in beef production, with a vision of creating cattle that consistently produce prime-quality meat. His approach combines scientific understanding, generational farming wisdom, and a commitment to delivering the best possible product to consumers.

Genetic Solutions to Assist with BRD
BRD—is one, if not the most costly, health issue in the cattle industry today. Our guests today are Ross Havens with Nichols Farms in Bridgewater, Iowa, and John Genho with Eldon Farms in Woodville, Virginia.
This was an extremely interesting discussion with Ross and Jon regarding the Nichols Bull Program, called Shield, which is a genetic predictor for bulls that carry resistance to BRD. Nichols Farms has a Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD) genetic prediction. The bulls will be represented with the Nichols Health Shield logo and are of the top 30% of the Nichols Genetic Evaluation for resistance to BRD. BRD costs our industry $900 million annually in economic losses from death, reduced feed efficiency, and treatment cost. Nichols Farms is working and researching to put some of these dollars back into our customers' pockets. The Health Shield is the probability (in %) of a calf not being treated for respiratory disease post weaning.
Nichols Farms is a family-owned business that has been providing superior beef genetics for generations. Our focus on breeding top-quality bulls started many years ago and has been passed down from one generation to the next. We take great pride in our work and are committed to raising the best bulls possible. Our team is made up of experienced professionals who are passionate about what they do. We work hard every day to improve our genetics and provide our customers with the best possible service. Contact us today to learn more about our history and how we can help improve your herd.
The acquisition of Livestock Genetic Services (LGS) enhances Neogen's in-house genetic evaluation capabilities, and complements the company's unparalleled global network of animal genomics laboratories. LGS has been a long-time strategic partner of Neogen's genomics business.
John Genho formerly owned Livestock Genetic Services, which was acquired by Neogen. Information regarding that acquisition follows. "One value of Neogen's genomic services is our ability to translate genomic information into timely, accurate animal trait information for cattle producers," said Dr. Stewart Bauck, Neogen's vice president of agrigenomics. "Adding Livestock Genetic Services, and its owner John Genho, will help Neogen accelerate the adoption of genomics world-wide by helping customers easily and quickly utilize genomic information in their commercial operations. This new capability will position Neogen as the only global agrigenomics business with a full end-to-end solution."
"After years of collaboration with Neogen, I am very pleased to be part of the much larger, very capable team of genomic professionals," said Genho. "Our business has grown to the point that becoming part of a world-leading provider of animal genomic services will provide my customers with the best possible services and support."

We will have a variety of bull breeds available, including Registered Charolais, Registered Angus, Registered Brangus, Registered Brahman, and F1s.
The weekend's events are open to the entire family, so we hope to see you all there starting Friday morning!
Circle F Farms is owned and operated by Woody Folsom and his wife Tamela with their children Tanner and Anna Kate. Originally established to serve as tribute to his late father, Woody went in search for some of the best Brahman genetics in the Country. 13 years later and Circle F is one of the largest Brahman herds in the Southeast part of the Country.
Located in Baxley, Georgia, Circle F consists of roughly 3,000 acres, 700 head of Registered Brahmans, 300 head of F1 cattle, 300 head of Registered Angus, 150 head of Registered Brangus, an elite group of quarter horses, draft mules, and much more.
Circle F has been Woody’s dream since he was a child and he helped his family on their small farm. While agriculture is his passion, Woody’s start began and continues in the car industry. He currently owns 8 car dealerships where he and his son Tanner work side by side to grow their brand within the industry, and it doesn’t stop there!
Circle F’s brand has grown to incorporate a Meat store, which Tamela runs, an abattoir and their newly established Outfitter store. All of which proudly carry the Circle F name.
As you can see, diversity is Woody’s middle name.
We invite you to join us in Baxley and come enjoy it all with us! We hope you enjoy it all as much as we do!
The Brangus breed was developed to utilize the superior traits of Angus & Brahman cattle. Their genetics are stabilized at 3/8 Brahman and 5/8 Angus. The combination results in a breed which unites the traits of two highly successful parent breeds. The Brahman, through rigorous natural selection, developed disease resistance, overall hardiness and outstanding maternal instincts while the Angus are known for their superior carcass qualities.
Circle F Farms was involved in the Brangus breed in the early 2000’s before dispersing the herd and then ultimately purchasing many of our original genetics in 2023 when we re-entered the breed. Brangus & Ultrablack cattle are extremely popular in the Southern United States and provide an expanded market depending on the amount of Brahman-influence desired. It is only natural to have the Brangus & Ultrablack cattle at Circle F Farms to fill the “Brahman-influence gap” between the F-1 and 1/8 bloods. Circle F Farms has purchased many of the top genetics in the Brangus breed with an emphasis on performance-oriented cattle with eye appeal. A segment of the Circle F Farms Registered Angus Cows are mated to Registered Brangus Bulls to produce Ultrablack progeny. Circle F Farms collects Birth Weights, Weaning Weights, Yearling Weights, carcass ultrasound measurements, & DNA on each animal. This information is for internal use, provided in the sale catalog, and submitted to the International Brangus Breeders Association. Currently all Brangus & Ultrablack Bulls are marketed though the Circle F Farms Annual Production Sale with the heifers being retained to grow the herd.
The Brahman breed was created in the early 1900’s out of necessity along the Gulf Coast Region due to its environmental adaptability, insect resistance, longevity, heartiness, and mothering ability. It is calculated that close to 80% of the cattle in the world are Brahman or Brahman-influenced validating their significant contribution to the beef industry.
Circle F Farms currently runs over 700 head of Registered Brahman cows. The foundation of the herd was purchased from J.D. Hudgins, Inc. and V8 Ranch. Today most of the Brahman cows that roam Circle F Farms wear a V8, half circle L, or circle F brand. The top 150 of these cows based on phenotype, pedigree, performance, and production have been selected and bred to Registered Brahman bulls to create offspring that are retained as replacements, sold in the Annual Production Sale, or consigned to other premier auctions. In 2022 Circle F Farms began an invitro-fertilization program where top donors were utilized to multiply superior progeny by some of the most proven & popular sires in the breed. Circle F Farms collects Birth Weights, Weaning Weights, Yearling Weights, and carcass ultrasounds on each animal. This information is utilized internally to make selection decisions, provided in our sale catalog, and reported to the American Brahman Breeders Association to be used in their genetic evaluation.
The F-1 cross has been established by academia and cattlemen alike as the premier commercial animal for the Southern US Region. The F-1 offspring is the most adapted, fastest growing, longest lasting, combines the best traits of both parents, and requires less inputs all equating to more profitability.
Circle F Farms breeds approximately 550 Registered Brahman cows to Hereford, Angus, Red Angus, & Charolais bulls to produce F-1 Bulls & Females. The resulting offspring is marketed through the Circle F Farms Annual Production Sale and other special marketing opportunities. The sires to the F-1 progeny are selected from some of the most progressive operations in the United States with an emphasis placed on structural correctness, ruggedness, moderate frame size, depth of rib, muscle, scrotal circumference, and carcass quality. Circle F Farms collects Birth Weights, Weaning Weights, Yearling Weights, and carcass ultrasounds on each F-1 animal. The collected information is utilized internally to make mating decisions as well as provided in our sale catalog for the bulls.
Located in Baxley, Georgia, our Black Angus Donor Cow Program is built on the backs of the Burgess Cow Family. They are all moderate framed, deep bodied, phenotypically excellent maternal cows that raise big calves that are good on their feet and add superior genetics to our herd.

Welcome back to the American Cattlemen Podcast. Just ahead. we have Gale McKinney he's the owner of the American Cattlemen and he sits down with Russ Princ with Leachman Cattle.
Russ, the sales manager for Leachman Cattle, brings extensive experience in the beef industry, having worked in semen collection and ranch management before joining Leachman in 2022. Leachman Cattle has a rich history dating back to the 1970s, now part of the URIs family of companies. Their flagship product is the stabilizer composite breed, developed from USDA research, combining 50% British and 50% continental breed genetics. This approach focuses on creating cattle with optimal red meat yield, marbling, fertility, and growth potential. The company's unique selling point is its sophisticated genetic indexing system, including dollar profit, dollar feeder, and dollar ranch indexes. These tools provide producers with comprehensive data to make more informed breeding decisions. The indexes consider multiple factors like fertility, feed efficiency, carcass quality, and long-term profitability.
A significant innovation is their inherit DNA testing, which allows producers to evaluate female cattle's genetic potential beyond visual assessment. This technology helps identify traits like udder quality, foot structure, and fertility, enabling more precise herd management. Leachman Cattle has also made significant strides in the beef on dairy sector, developing specialized breeding lines for different dairy breeds to improve calf quality and economic value. Their partnership with GK Gym Farms includes the world's largest installation of feed efficiency monitoring bunks, collecting critical data to continually improve cattle genetics.
The company operates multiple sales across the United States, utilizing a sophisticated online auction platform that allows buyers to view and bid on cattle with comprehensive genetic information. Their mission remains focused on "better cows for a better world," emphasizing continuous improvement in cattle genetics to enhance profitability for producers and eating quality for consumers.

Join us as we chat with Sheila Patinkin and Roger Osinchuk about the upcoming Vermont Wagyu Retirement Celebration Sale.
Sheila is a fantastic person, and this interview with her and Roger was one of my favorites. Please take a few minutes from your schedule to listen to a story of dedication, perseverance, and a willingness to move forward.
From Sheila: "The heart of Vermont Wagyu has always been the remarkable animals they have raised, the dedicated team that has been stewards of this challenging Vermont farmland, and their customers, who have supported them. Sheila is finding it’s not easy to let go. This farm has filled my days and shaped my purpose. But the time has come. And before I retire, I invite you to join us one last time. Welcome to Vermont Wagyu’s final auction.
This sale is more than just a catalog of animals—it’s a celebration of the animals we’ve bred. I’m incredibly proud of how far Vermont Wagyu has come. We started with the dream of producing the very best Wagyu beef, steaks that would set a new standard. Our original high-Tajima herd held that promise. In the early days, we selected primarily for growth, a Tajima shortcoming. But over time, we embraced new tools: ultrasound, grading cameras, and genetic estimates like ePDs and ebVs. Our commitment to data and continuous improvement earned us recognition in the Wagyu community. And the results speak for themselves. Our steaks have become consistent winners.
Our herd has shown steady improvement in marbling and growth potential—validated by rising ImF averages in Digital beef. Most exciting, we’ve begun to meet the Wagyu breeder’s holy grail: combining high marbling with strong growth. You’ll see this reflected in our newest bulls in this sale—VT Eric L258, VTm214, and VTm215—our top bulls that we see as the future of American Wagyu excellence. Join us on the farm from September 26 to 27. Vermont will be in full fall bloom.
There will be an outstanding group of animals available, and we look forward to introducing you to them. You’ll also get a glimpse into the next chapter, as we pivot to growing our eCommerce business. But most importantly, come to share your stories—where you're going next, and how we can continue to support you, even as Vermont Wagyu lives on through your herds."
An outstanding opportunity to enter the Wagyu Breed or enhance your current herd!

Welcome back to the American Cattlemen Podcast. Just ahead, we have Dustin Hector, he's the Director of Business Development for the American Cattlemen Media Group, and he sits down with Dr. T. Robin Falkner Beef Cattle Technical Consultant for Elanco Animal Health.
Dr. Falkner shared his roots in North Mississippi, where he grew up on a multi-generational family farm that relied on beef cattle to sustain the family during challenging economic times.
With a doctorate from Mississippi State University and years of experience in private practice and extension work, Dr. Falkner brings a unique perspective to cattle health management. He challenges traditional thinking about animal health protocols, arguing that producers should move beyond simple vaccination checklists to a more holistic approach that considers the entire cattle production system.
Dr. Falkner emphasized that an effective animal health program does more than protect cattle from disease—it communicates value to potential buyers. He illustrated this point with a compelling story from a presentation in Wyoming, where he demonstrated how a comprehensive health program could transform the marketability of replacement heifers. By implementing strategic vaccination and management practices, producers can open up new market opportunities and potentially increase the value of their cattle.
The discussion highlighted the complex challenges in the cattle industry, including the disconnect between seasonal calf production and year-round beef demand. Dr. Falkner stressed the importance of understanding the entire production chain, from cow-calf operations through stocker and feedlot stages.Throughout the conversation, his passion for veterinary medicine and cattle production was evident. He views his work not just as a job, but as a meaningful way to support agricultural families and improve the cattle industry. Dr. Falkner's approach goes beyond technical solutions, focusing on building relationships and creating value through thoughtful animal health management.
